What does an assistant stage manager do?

The Assistant Stage Manager is the first 'rung' on the Stage Management ladder. Typical tasks involve stage sweeping, sitting in on rehearsals, propping, covering the book, being responsible for cues during a performance, making sure the full company is present, assisting the crew and actors, paperwork and making tea - the role of the ASM is incredibly varies and can totally depend on the type of show you are working on. Assistant Stage Managers are great communicators, stay calm under pressure, can multi-task and are ruthlessly efficient. ASMs may start out as Production Assistants or Stage Assistants. The Assistant Stage Manager naturally progresses to Deputy Stage Manager, then Stage Manager, Company Stage Manager and Production Manager but a good knowledge of ASM duties is a useful base for many other broader theatre career paths.

The Stage Management Association is the national organisation for all SM careers, you can visit their website here.
