What does a theatre stage manager do?

The duties of the Stage Manager very much depend on the production they're working on. A typical day might involve daily problem solving, communicating with all departments and dealing with any problems as soon as they arise, sweeping and maintaining the stage, prepping the set, running LX/SF, writing show reports. SMs often move into their role after having worked as an Assistant Stage Manager or Deputy Stage Manager and frequently move on to work as Company Stage Managers and Production Managers.

The Stage Management Association is the national organisation for all SM careers, you can visit their website here.

You can download the SMA's Stage Management Career Guide here.
